Body Image Betrayal and Related Issues started nearly 25 years ago by Wendy McWhorter-Finney with one simple mission, to use her years of experience struggling with her own body image and eating disorder "...to offer support for the individuals still enmeshed in combat with their eating disorder, education for the people who love them, and most of all... hope for an end to the nightmare." In partnership with Something Fishy, BIBRI launched an information, support and connection resource that included referral links, personal stories and poetry from other survivors, a web-ring to connect other sites dedicated to supporting those with eating disorders and helped facilitate one of the first online chat support groups for those with eating disorders and their family and friends. |
Today, like the phoenix in our logo, Body Image Betrayal and Related Issues is undergoing a 'rebirth'. Much has changed in the way we seek out and obtain information, connection, and support. BIBRI is once again rising to the challenge of the ever-increasing need for support of those individuals who are struggling with issues of body image and eating disorders.
25 years ago, we dedicated ourselves to simply helping "..men and women with eating disorders".
Today's world, however, is more complex than that. Eating disorders are no longer singular issues. Increasingly more often, they are accompanied by other complex issues like body image, gender identity, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or other anxiety and mood disorders. Females age 14-20 are no longer the typical demographic of someone with an eating disorder. The demographic of an eating disorder is as diverse as the variety of eating disorders themselves.
BIBRI is recommitting itself to offering support to this incredibly diverse and ever-growing society of struggling individuals in four fundamental ways.
